Soil around Merbabu Mountain is fertile so it used to be plantation by the residents for example: onion, carrot, cabbage, tobbaco. Beside these plants, many pines grow there. The green of plantation can be viewed and enjoyed during the journey.
Merbabu Mountain has 3142 meters high above the seal level or 2710 meters high above the highland of Magelang. The top of this mountain is mentioned as Kenteng Songo. Beside Kenteng Songo as the top of Merbabu Mountain, there is a second top that mentioned as Syarif which has 3119 meters high above the sea level. The top of Merapi Mountain and Sumbing Mountain also Sindoro Mountain can be seen clearly from Kenteng Songo.
The journey to reach the top of Merbabu Mountain can be passed through from 3 ways; they are from Tekelan - Kopeng/Salatiga - Semarang Regency, Wekas - Kaponan - Magelang Regency, and Selo - Boyolali. The easiest way to reach the top is depended on many things, but most of climbers said Tekelan - Kopeng/Salatiga - Semarang Regency is the easiest way to be passed through.
If the climbing passes through from Tekelan, there are many people who live in around Kopeng are Buddhist so there can be found some viharas. Some prohibition orders have been made to safe the journey, in examples: prohibition to urinate in certain places, prohibition wearing green and red clothes. In certain day, the residents do traditional ceremony in around Merbabu craters.
The needed time for reaching the top is depend with many conditions but if some preparations have planned and the weather is good, most climbers can reach the top in around 8 hours. The best season for climbing is in dry season because it is safer and the scenery can be viewed clearly.
